By that I mean that liquids, such as, blood as an element will be the smallest problem. I am looking forward of taking you on a mind trip into my world as a crime scene cleaner.

#003 Cause of Death: Cause of Death. The podcast. The crime scene.
A few years ago, I received a job from an apartment owner. He brought a key to my office and said: "Mr. Engel, please be so kind and take care of it. I have a tenant, a married couple, who live in Frankfurt in one of my apartments and they had a terrible fight last night." "The tenants are also a bit difficult", he told me. They like to party and are probably quite unpopular in the house. On this information basis, my co-worker and I then drove to this crime scene in Frankfurt, and we arrived at the location. Through our labeled vehicle, a lady on the street already received us waving her hands. She was a roommate in the house and said: "Oh thank God you are here. We have a little problem here. In the hallway we have a lot of blood." Well, we then entered this apartment entrance, this house entrance, this hallway and you could see primarily footprints on the floor. Or rather the prints of a shoe drawn through blood on the stone floor. So, you could also see that there were children's bicycles in the entrance area and so on. It was an unacceptable condition. I then said: "No problem, we will take care of this situation and remove these traces immediately."
We are hired by the owner to take care of the entire problem. And then she told me a bit (like neighbors do): "Yes, you know, there are always wild parties going on. The people are so loud, and besides, they are not only drinking a lot we are also thinking they might take drugs." We were confronted by the wildest speculations. I don't generally pay much attention to this, because there's always a lot of talking. But, okay. So, we took care of the matter and came through the hallway to the apartment door. And there you could see, okay, things were going crazy last night. The apartment door showed evidence of violence in the frame area, and it was no longer possible to close it properly. Everything was broken. The Fournier from the door frame. And when we opened the apartment door, we could already see in the hallway area that the dresser was overturned. So, we had to climb over this dresser. On the left side we could see the living room and it looked catastrophic, bottles on the floor, couch elements overturned. The pictures were hanging crooked on the wall. So, you knew: okay, there was real chaos here last night.
We are hired by the owner to take care of the entire problem. And then she told me a bit (like neighbors do): It must be said that the apartment was in very neglected condition. The dishes were piled up in the kitchen, the household garbage was piled up to the ceiling in a corner, and there was a disgusting unpleasant smell of garbage in the entire apartment.
During further inspection of the apartment, we came to the bathroom, and in the bathroom, you could see a puddle of blood over a square meter on the white tiled floor in front of the sink. The entire bathroom was otherwise full of spattered blood and from my experience I knew: okay, someone who was seriously injured must have stayed here for a very long time. It was also recognizable from the large pool of blood. So, someone lost a lot of blood. And I agreed with my co-worker that he would take care of the living room a bit, clear the decks, and remove the trash. Then we would continue cleaning together, and I would first take care of the bathroom as one of the main crime scene areas. In the early days, there was a certain work process that we had implemented, but it does not exist today. That's a very important point. So, back then we didn't use a wet vacuum cleaner to soak up these liquids like blood or faecals.
Instead, we first covered the liquids with absorbent rugs, paper towels, or other things. Then, when they were soaked up, we practically picked them up in a circle and threw them into a garbage bag and got rid of them. That was our working process at that time. No sooner said than done. I was already wearing my personal safety equipment. I started working and put the rags over this pool of blood. His blood was already thickened. It was similar to plasma, and while cleaning I thought: well, maybe you have to push it together a little with the spatula so that the rough cleaning processes can also be optimally mapped with it.

I was already wearing my personal safety equipment. I started working and put the rags over this pool of blood. His blood was already thickened. It was similar to plasma, and while cleaning I thought: And while I was performing my cleaning process with the rugs, it suddenly shocked me in my hand through my arm in my right shoulder, like some kind of lightning strike. I was completely perplexed and could not deal with such a physical reaction at all. And somehow, I continued working and didn’t pay much attention to it. A few seconds later, I noticed that my glove was getting uncomfortably warm and wet. I took off the glove and looked into the palm of my hand. And on the palm of my hand, I suddenly spotted a deep cut in my muscle flesh about ten centimeters long. I was shocked. What happened?
The night before during arguments, a perfume bottle must have fallen from the sink onto the floor and broken. A large shard, a long large shard that was not visible to me at the moment of cleaning must have dived in the blood plasma. I was terribly upset at first. I thought: man, what a complete idiot you are!Always preaching to the people, and you yourself don’t even pay enough attention to not get injured while working. That was the first thing I had in mind, and in the course of the measures I thought: finish your Job and then get to the hospital.
And while working, suddenly thoughts came to me: alcohol, fight, drugs. And I suddenly thought: for God's sake, now you are hurt, deeply hurt. You've got a deep cut, you've bled, you've had to deal with blood. Are you now possibly ill from this accident? Do you have any illness? I could not let go of that.
I told my employee: watch out, you have to drive me to the hospital. It wasn't far from the location we were at. There's a hospital in Frankfurt Höchst, and I asked him to please drive me over there. I taped my hand with duct tape, so that it wouldn't continue bleeding so much. And on the way to the hospital, I contacted the owner of the apartment again and asked: Tell me, do you know anything about your tenants, beyond what you told me? I just had a little faux pas, an accident, and I would just like to know: are they sick? Do you know anything? He couldn't answer me right away and so I had to wait until I was in the hospital. But he was able to tell me that the two tenants had been admitted to the same hospital the night before and were both seriously injured and hospitalized. I arrived at the emergency room, and they took me in and asked me: "What happened?" I said: "Well, I had an accident at work. I'm a crime scene cleaner.
I cut myself and I heard that X and Y are stationed here with you. And I'd really like to talk to them. Why don't you tell me where they are?" Of course, they didn't do that. I really freaked out. I said, "That can't be true. I'm a family man, I've got a thought in my mind right now. Please, just tell me: Are the people sick or are they not sick? I want to have clarity." And that was completely unjustified, of course. I did get mad with stuff, but there was a nurse and I really have to thank her very much for that. She had given me the information out of pity that both people were actually sick. They both had hepatitis C. And as if that wasn't bad enough,
I cut myself and I heard that X and Y are stationed here with you. And I'd really like to talk to them. Why don't you tell me where they are?" Of course, they didn't do that. I really freaked out. I said, "That can't be true. I'm a family man, I've got a thought in my mind right now. Please, just tell me: They were also HIV positive!

I said, "That can't be true. I'm a family man, I've got a thought in my mind right now. Please, just tell me: Life impact.

I said, "That can't be true. I'm a family man, I've got a thought in my mind right now. Please, just tell me: In this moment my world was falling apart. My emotional world collapsed like a house of cards.
I cut myself and I heard that X and Y are stationed here with you. And I'd really like to talk to them. Why don't you tell me where they are?" Of course, they didn't do that. I really freaked out. I said, "That can't be true. I'm a family man, I've got a thought in my mind right now. Please, just tell me: All the values that I had before in my life were no longer worth anything. I first had to get out for fresh air, take a deep breath and get myself together. And then I had myself tested. It must be said that in the early days, during that period, it was really very, very difficult. There were no quick tests and you didn't get results right away. Therefore, I had to wait for weeks, and this waiting for weeks was a very anxious time. I wasn't myself at all. And I was somehow trapped in my mind too. For the first time I thought about a death that was self-determined. I had a world of values of strength, of creating wealth, of starting a family, etc. All of that had already become real for me. And at that moment, when I hadn't had any clarity, am I sick or am I not sick,
I kept getting involved in this kind of mind game, which dragged me down very, very far. The weeks went by and I had been looking forward to this appointment with the doctor, to finally get clarity, finally clarity about: am I sick or am I not sick? Is my life as I know it perhaps over? Do I want to end it myself?
The day came and the doctor told me: Mr. Engel, I have very good news. You do not have hepatitis or HIV. At that moment and days later, I had a high, a high of happiness. Not only was I lucky, but I felt a biochemical firework in my body that only continued going in a positive direction. From that moment on, there was only a pink world for me, and I swore to myself that I would like to keep this world, this happiness, this moment of happiness as permanent as possible. Isn't it nice to always feel this positive?
The day came and the doctor told me: Of course, you don't have to wear rose-colored glasses all the time, and not everything in life is always great. But we do have certain thoughts. Isn't it much nicer if we include as many positive aspects as possible in these thoughts that we think? So, the definition of happiness, I don't want to be a schoolmaster here now, but this crime scene and this incident showed me at the time that maybe it's also the little things in life that count. The sunrise we enjoy, or a nice piece of meat. All this is always taken for granted every time a new day starts. But nothing can be taken for granted. Our definition of happiness, our common thinking depends on what we personally make of it. Enjoy the present moment! Take pleasure in what you do and try to be positive as often as possible, because it's all in the head. At this point I would like to thank you all and say goodbye. I would be very happy if you join my next episode. In this sense, your Marcell. Ciao.
